So many warm and wonderful memories about St. Albert the Great school are with the students who walked through her doors oh those many years ago. St. Albert’s was the heart of the community and its students reflected the soul of the community. More often than not, the symbiotic relationship between students – teachers – family was very harmonious and left many people an assortment of those warm and fuzzy feeling moments that so often in life are very hard to find.
The period of time that these little friends went to St. Albert’s was perhaps the height of St. Albert’s popularity with over 1200 families most years between 1967 – 1975. During this time, parishioner’s paid tuition on a monthly basis which was about $15/$20 per month, an incredible value even back then considering the education they would receive while attending St. Albert’s. This was a time of innocence for these children as they would see the wonder in a flower, or in hearing a guitar, or even in waiting in a line for a magical machine that would give them the best chocolate milk they would ever taste (for only a nickel too!).
The children who entered through the doors of the junior building all those decades ago were blank slates waiting to be taught. Although some of the children did attend kindergarten, many did not so all were treated as if this was their first learning experience. Where the children of today can usually read and write before first grade, that was not the case during the mid sixties.
One can only wonder if these children knew that well over 50 years later they would still be communicating with each other, and most importantly, still calling each other friend and even better, little friends.
