1967 WHY GO TO ST. ALBERT’S? – FROM A PARENT

When this book/website was proposed I was asked if we knew of any older person who could say a few words about St. Albert the Great and why they chose to send their kids there instead of the free public school.

I asked my mother Bernadine Mack and she explained that she and my dad each had 12 years of Catholic upbringing and when they moved from Elmira, NY to Detroit (to work for Ford Motor) they wanted to live in a house close to good schools and close to my dad’s work – in a neighborhood with lots of kids and like minded families.

Because they were raised Catholic, they wanted to instill in their children the same morals and good deeds as they had growing up. They found a house on Tulane and Lehigh, which was one block and two houses from St. Albert the Great school and church. That decision launched a priceless childhood for me, filled with memories that fill my heart each time I open Facebook, and shaped my life to be a responsible citizen. I don’t mean to suggest that a public school education would have had different results. I feel I learned to respect elders and to be a good person by being educated surrounded by prayer and good deeds.
