1964 SPORT TEAMS BEGIN (WITH TEAM PHOTOS)

Sports are an important part of any school program as it builds school spirit and students learn how to work together to become greater than the sum of their parts. With the importance of sports, some may ask that since St. Albert’s school began in the mid fifties, why was it almost till the mid sixties that they fielded any sports teams? There were several reasons that St. Albert’s did not participate in competitive sports earlier than 1964 but the main reason was simple – lack of 7th and 8th grade students.

St. Albert’s did not start off with 8 full grades but only one, and then they would add a new class each year. When the school building was completed in 1960 there were only four classes because they had only had four years of open schooling. 1964 was the first year St. Albert’s had a full complement of students from all eight grades.

The lack of a gym (or multi-purpose building as it was officially called) also presented an inconvenience as basketball games would be played at Madison school, Pardee school, Annapolis school, and St. Sebastian school. It would be several years before the multi-purpose building would be built but that did not hamper the determination of the students of St. Albert’s during those early years.
